For each person who comes into therapy, the process and reasons are unique. There might be circumstances in your life that have thrown you into crisis, like the end of a primary relationship, the loss of a job, the death of someone close to you, or the diagnosis of an illness. It may also be that you have come to the end of your rope regarding ongoing patterns that are causing you difficulty or pain: relationship problems, addictions, chronic loneliness, anxiety or depression. Therapy might be, for you, something with clearly defined goals and a time frame, or it might evolve into a more open-ended quest for a better life.


Entering therapy means starting a different relationship with yourself and a new relationship with another person: your therapist. The therapy session provides a time and space that is entirely devoted to you, where you can gradually discover and give voice to those things that need to be aired. The pressures and expectations of your everyday life are placed on hold, leaving you free to express your true feelings, or to ask “Who am I when I’m alone, away from any of the roles I normally take upon myself?”

My job as your therapist

It is my job as a therapist to try, together with you, to understand what your life is like, and what is contributing to you feeling constricted or is blocking the way you would like your life to be. As a therapist, I ask questions and direct our attention to areas that might be passed over and that hold meaning for you. In gradually being able to voice your deepest feelings, you may find healing and peace in sharing these with someone who will not turn away or judge you.

The therapy process

A typical session often starts with events from the present, which may lead us into explorations about how the past influences your life now. In becoming more aware of what has shaped you, you will also become more mindful about how you react to your present day situations, and gradually enlarge your capacity to feel that you are in control of your life and can live the way you want to.
